Note - This tutorial is aimed at less experienced Tableau users.
My company has run a couple of campaigns on our website and on social media. As an analyst, I want to bring Adobe Analytics data and Facebook Ads data into Tableau with the purpose of creating campaign performance dashboards for my management team.
I will show you how Cognetik Cloud Connector works with one single block and two data sources, with dimensions and measures changing per data source, while using Tableau’s feature to 'join data'. The common element, in this case, is the 'campaign name'.
To access our connector, open Tableau and on the left-hand side, under 'Connect to a Server', click 'Web Data Connector'. In the URL box, type http://tableau.cognetik.com
After accessing the connector in Tableau, just click on the 'Don’t have an account?' button.
Fill in the fields, click 'Sign Up' and your account is created on the spot.
Once you do that you’ll be able to use our connector.
Before you get started, make sure you’ve linked all your accounts. Go to 'Link a new credential'.
Select your data source.
Enter your credentials and click 'Link'.

How to link the connector to your other sources:
- Google Analytics: just insert your GA credentials. Note that linking your Google account will automatically link all the Google products like AdWords, DoubleClick, and YouTube.
- Facebook Ads and Pages: just insert your Facebook credentials
- Bing Ads: enter your Microsoft credentials
- Kochava: create an API key, as shown here.
- Twitter Ads: just insert your Twitter credentials
To see a list of all your linked accounts, click on 'Credential List'.
Let’s start building our Adobe Analytics query.
Choose 'Adobe Analytics' from the 'Choose a provider' drop-down list.
Select your Credential and Report Suite (once you link your Adobe Analytics account, the info will be easy to select from our connector drop-down list)
You can now filter your data: you can choose from Dimensions (optional), Metrics (mandatory) and Segments (optional). It’s easy to find them from the drop-down list. You can bring anything that’s set up in your Adobe Analytics report suite.
I’ve selected data related to my campaign performance and also a segment of users I'm interested in that I’ve previously set up in Adobe Analytics.
You can choose from 3 types of granularities
or no granularity at all.
You can choose from 3 types of calendars:
- Standard calendar - Uses Gregorian calendar (the first day of the week is Sunday, and months are determined by the calendar dates)
- Retail calendar - Uses the National Retail Federation calendar (The first day of the week is Sunday, but the months are defined by the 4-5-4 NRF calendar)
- Custom calendar - Select the day the week starts (very useful if the first day of the week is not Sunday, this option allows the user to define custom start days for weeks).This comes in handy when pulling data from a data source at a weekly or monthly granularity because data would already be correctly aggregated at these levels, with the Cognetik Cloud Connector doing all the heavy lifting.
You can now also select a Timezone for your data.
In the present you have a lot of already Preset Date ranges you can use. Our connector also includes the option to use Date Expressions for all connectors; this is frequently used for Adobe Analytics data. Here's more information on Date expressions.
If you need a specific period of time, you can use a Start Date and an End date.
The row limit is 50,000 rows.
Top limit is only applicable to Adobe Analytics (filters out and returns the first 'n' rows ordered by the first metric chosen).

You can now Preview your request before creating a data extract in Tableau. This will allow you to explore the data quicker and confirm you have the correct data.
The preview runs fairly quickly because the processing is done by Cognetik’s distributed API engine and does not require waiting for Tableau to create a local database for the extract.
The preview section offers a few features to make data exploration easier:
Once you click SUBMIT, your data will be sent to Tableau.
In the 'Data Source' tab, click 'Update now'.
Your Adobe Analytics data is now displayed in Tableau.
To add your Facebook data in Tableau, click the 'Add' button next to 'Connections'.
Select 'Web data connector' to access our connector. Paste http://tableau.cognetik.com in the URL Box and hit Enter.
Use your Cognetik credentials to Log In.
Choose Facebook Ads from the Provider drop-down list.
Start building your query with the desired dimensions/metrics/segments.
Note - Make sure you link your Facebook Ads data first.
The rest of the fields (granularity, timezone, calendar, date range and row limit) are the same ones we used to create the first Adobe Analytics extract.
Once you’re done, click Submit.
You can now see both of your data sources, Adobe Analytics and Facebook under 'Connections'.
You can now easily join your data by a common element which is the 'campaign name'. I’m going to choose left join.
We can now go ahead and build our dashboards!
